Action movies have a way of pumping people up and generating excitement over audiences. They provide tension, thrills, energy, and high-impact action through various effects and fast-paced storylines (i.e. explosions, chases, fist and gun fights). The story often takes backseat to the action effects. This genre is similar to adventure, thriller/suspense and road films, often described in any of these ways, and often has elements of espionage and heroism.
The average action film is aimed toward males in their teens to late thirties. In general, people within this age range have the most time to go to the theatre and watch films. They also tend to be adventure seekers and love to get their adrenaline going. Though this is general information, people can be drawn to different types of action movies. Let’s take a look at some of the different subgenres.
Superhero characters (like Superman) are larger-than-life heroes who stop villains and fight for all things good. Superheroes often possess extraordinary powers, a weakness, have a strong moral code, wear a distinctive costume, and hide behind a secret identity in order to protect their loved ones.
Many thriller movies contain high-octane action throughout them, so not only will your heart be pumping from some sweet action, but also from thrills and chills.
These films often contain elements of both action and fantasy while being set in exotic locations. There’s often an adventurous hero trying to retrieve some sort of valuable treasure and have a love interest mixed in. Who doesn’t love a little Indiana Jones action?
These are perfect films to fill with loads of action, as they often involve cops as the heroes. And what do cops do? Carry guns, often resulting in gun fights, and are involved in high energy car chases, often resulting in flipping vehicles. Sounds like an awesome action-packed time to me.
Spies tend to be extra intelligent, which allow them to stay one step ahead of the villains of the film. Since spies are often involved with the police department, you can expect some good gun action. These films double your pleasure since spies also tend to possess fancy technology and special gadgets – just think about the classic movies starring James Bond. Some espionage films boarder the thriller genre.
These movies are like most traditional science fiction films, except that they emphasize gun or sword play, battles or war, explosions and other sci-fi elements. Futuristic and sci-fi action movies often raise questions and issues of current societal problems beneath the exciting attention-grabbing action.
